Sol Gittleman was born in 1934 in Hoboken, New Jersey. After earning degrees from Drew University (BA, 1955), Columbia University (MA, 1956), and the University of Michigan (PhD, 1961), Gittleman began teaching in the German Department at Tufts University in 1964. As Provost, Gittleman increased the focus on faculty scholarship and research, and drafted a policy prohibiting sexual relationships between faculty and students.
