This collection contains drafts of several Martin Green manuscripts, handwritten notes on both loose paper and in notebooks, and research material in English, French, Russian, and German. There are also subject files which include correspondence and book proposals.

Biographical / Historical
Martin Burgess Green (1927-2010) was a professor in the English Department at Tufts University from 1963-65 and then again from 1968-94. He received a B.A. from St. John's College in Cambridge, where he studied with the legendary F.R. Leavis. Martin received his M.A. from King's College of the University of London in 1951, and then served in the Royal Air Force for two years before teaching in Turkey and France. In 1957 he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Professor Green published 37 books on a variety of topics ranging from an examination of Tolstoy and Gandhi to an analysis of the Robinson Crusoe adventure story. He is also known for his work on the Von Richthofen sisters and their involvement with Otto Gross related to the Ascona Movement in Switzerland.
While at Tufts, Professor Green was recognized for his work with two Guggenheim Fellowships, one awarded in 1974 and the other in 1977; a residency at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 1980-1981; and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities, awarded in 1987.
His published works include: Mirror for Anglo Saxons; Dreams of Adventure, Deeds of Empire; The Great American Adventure; The Robinson Crusoe Story; The Challenge of the Mahatmas; Tolstoy and Gandhi, Men of Peace; The Origins of Nonviolence; The Von Richthofen Sisters; Children of the Sun; and The Triumph of Pierrot.

Custodial History
The materials were donated to the archive in Spring 2003. Additional accessions were made in 2010 and 2011.
Processing Information
Material for this collection was started to be processed in Spring 2008 by Lauren Miller, supervised by Susanne Belovari. There was no original order. Some titles in box 001 have been supplied by the archivist are indicated by square brackets. Handwritten notebooks were not put in folders; rather each notebook was identified with a rare book slip. Notebooks were housed lying flat so that their spines are not harmed. The Elsa von Richthofen collection, donated also by Martin Green, contains very similar research material. The following materials have been de-accessioned from the collection: a credit report, newspaper clippings from the Boston Globe, financial receipts, photocopied class material, mental health literature, and a flier for a lecture.
