- Scope and Contents
-
This collection contains project files, correspondence, administrative and financial records, publications, audio tapes, video tapes, curricula, photographs, slides, and promotional materials created by Cultural Survival. Also included in the collection are a number of publications and audiovisual materials created by indigenous peoples and sympathetic non-profit organizations and subsequently collected by Cultural Survival staff. The bulk of the material dates from 1979 to 2005. Many of the records document Cultural Survival Projects and Special Projects in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and North America, as well as Cultural Survival’s research and educational projects. Many of these project and research files were kept by Ted Macdonald, Cultural Survival’s first staff member, who preserved the most complete collection of early project files. This collection also contains records relating to Cultural Survival Bazaar trade festivals; the 1992 British and US public television video series Millennium: Tribal Wisdom and the Modern World, hosted by and focused on the work of Cultural Survival founder David Maybury-Lewis; and a nearly full run of Cultural Survival Quarterly, Cultural Survival’s flagship publication.
Some materials may be restricted due to legal or privacy concerns. In addition, rights issue to the images may be complicated in an attempt to maintain cultural sensitivity. Mark Camp, Deputy Executive Director of Cultural Survival, notes: “As an Indigenous rights issue, Cultural Survival now, in most cases, considers it a best practice to obtain permission from the subject of the photo in addition to that of the photographer. Also, some cultures have strong taboos and prohibitions against reproducing images of deceased persons. In some cases, recent international agreements govern the use of such images.”
