This collection consists of materials related to the history of theater collected by Earl Stanley Stewart and his father, Charles H. Stewart. There is a particular emphasis on the theater scene in the greater Boston area in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Biographical / Historical

Earl Stanley Stewart (1907-1993) was born in 1907 to Charles H. and Mina W. Stewart. He worked for his father's theater backdrop company in Somerville for a number of years. He served in the military in World War II and married a British woman in 1946 before returning to the United States. Stewart was also an avid theater historian and collected materials related to the history of theater. He died in 1993 at the age of 86.

Arrangement

This collection is organized in two series: Earl Stanley Stewart theater collection and Charles H. Stewart theater collection.

Custodial History

The Charles H. Stewart collection was brought to DCA sometime in the early 2000s without documentation or a donor agreement. These materials were eventually moved to the DCA stacks in 2010, but remained uncataloged until the DCA collections survey in June 2016. The Earl Stanley Stewart collection was accessioned in 2014. A donor agreement covering the whole collection, Charles H. and Earl Stanley Stewart, was received on March 24, 2014. It can be found in the physical collection documentation folder for MS173.
