Biographical / Historical
Tufts Institute of the Environment (TIE) was created in 1998 in response to a need that developed out of the rich history of earlier environmental programs and activity at Tufts University. As early as 1962, Tufts offered environmental classes, long before most other universities saw the need for such programs. In 1984 The Center for Environmental Management was established, which with the help of the EPA focused on interdisciplinary training and outreach. A precursor to TIE it supported more than 65 faculty members to conduct research projects, training, and outreach. In 1990 Tufts was the birthplace of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future and lead signatory on the Talloires Declaration which articulated the responsibility of universities to work on environmental problems. 1990, 93, and 97 saw the birth of the Tufts Environmental Literacy Institute (TELI), The Global Development and Environment Institute (GDAE), and the Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine (TuftsCCM), respectively.
Today, with core funding from the Provost Office, TIE is the hub for environmental research, teaching, and leadership at Tufts. We support many research projects, hold or co-sponsor events, and help to highlight the ongoing and growing number environmental activities.
