Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains two photo albums and over 4,000 negatives and slides. The bulk of the material dates from 1924 through 1970. Most of the images were taken by Janet Murrow and document Brewster and Murrow family activities, travels, and events, using 35 mm cameras or a larger format Rolleiflex camera. The images reflect what Janet considered important, memorable, beautiful or interesting about her family and their work over the decades. This material includes images from the Brewster family in the 1920s during Janet's teenage years; Janet and Edward's honeymoon in 1934 when they took a road trip through the United States and Mexico; the period when Janet and Edward lived in England and traveled Europe preceding and during World War II; Casey Murrow's childhood; Murrow family residences at Rumblewood and Glen Arden Farm in Pawling, New York; Brewster family gatherings in Middletown, Connecticut; Murrow family gatherings in Washington State; Janet and Edward's trips to Berlin in 1953 and Israel in 1956 to record radio and television programs; the Murrow family's travels in Europe, Asia, and Israel during Edward's sabbatical in 1959 and 1960; and Edward and Janet's visits to La Jolla, California in 1964.

In addition to many pictures of Janet, Edward, and their son, Casey, this material includes images of other Brewster and Murrow family members. Brewster family members commonly pictured include Janet's parents, Charles and Jennie Brewster, Janet's brother, Dart, his wife Lois, and their children, Helen and Charles (Chuck). Murrow family members commonly pictured include Edward's parents, Roscoe and Ethel, Edward's brother Dewey, his wife Donnie, and their daughters Helen and Nancy. Helen's sons, Rocky and Josh Nelson, and Nancy's family after her marriage to John Greulich are also pictured. The series also includes many pictures of the Ducas family, friends of the Murrows in Pawling, New York. Other prominent individuals who appear less frequently in the series include David and Paula Ben-Gurion, Anthony Eden, Nancy Lancaster, Larry LeSueur, Moshe Pearlman, Eric Sevareid, and Ronald and Marietta Tree.

Locations frequently pictured in this series include Jennie and Charles Brewster's home at 152 Mount Vernon Street, Middletown, Connecticut; areas and residences around Quaker Lake and Pawling, New York; Janet, Edward, and Casey's home on 74th Street in New York City, and later their apartment at 580 Park Avenue; and areas around Spokane and Bellingham Washington, where Edward's family lived. Other locations that appear less frequently in the series include Ronald Tree's estates at Ditchley Park, England and Heron Bay, Barbados; William Churchill's home at Chartwell in Kent, England; and the many places the Murrows visited in their travels: the Swiss Alps, Banff National Park in Canada, Ankhor Wat in Cambodia, Galilee and the Dead Sea in Israel, England, Mexico, Jamaica, Norway, Sweden, and many other locations.
