Abstract:

Herbert Hearsey graduated with a B. A. in 1934 and a Master in Education in 1935, both Tufts College, after which he obtained a masters in library science at the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana. In 1932 Hearsey participated in the Olympic semi-final tryouts of the 800m race, finishing second to last. fHe married Laura Beth Davis on September 23, 1938 in Arlington, MA.

Herbert Hearsey was born on November 27, 1910. He graduated with a B. A. in 1934 and a Master in Education in 1935, both Tufts College after which he obtained a masters in library science at the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana. In 1932 Hearsey participated in the Olympic semi-final tryouts of the 800m race, finishing second to last. He married Laura Beth Davis, another library science student at the time, on September 23, 1938 in Arlington, Massachusetts. The Hearseys moved to Bellingham, Washington in 1941 where Herbert Hearsey worked as reference librarian and also served as head of circulation at Western Washington State College until 1974 while his wife was a teacher and librarian for a public school. Hearsay co-founded the Bellingham Power Squadron and both Laura and Herbert were active members. Herbert published memoirs and books relating to boating.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains memorabilia and ephemera from Hearsey's time at Tufts. Materials include student tickets to athletic events, invitations to events, letters from the President of Tufts College, dance cards, a program for the freshman banquet of the Class of 1934, a membership card to the Deutscher Verein von Tufts College, speakeasy identification cards, and a program for the Olympic tryouts of 1932.
