The North Pacific Program (1985-1995) was part of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Directed by John Curtis Perry, the program endeavored to examine the political, economic, intellectual, and cultural trends of the countries that fall on the Pacific Rim. The countries represented in the program were the United States, Canada, Mexico, the former Soviet Union, China, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea. The program was not a formal field of study; rather it focused on enhancing the Fletcher curriculum with classes on culture and economics from the area of the North Pacific.
A large part of the North Pacific Program was an annual field summer seminar. From 1985-1989 this program was held in Hokkaido, Japan. In 1990, the location moved to Vladivostock, Russia and from then on a new location was chosen every year. The program also hosted an annual lecture series made possible by a generous grant from the Sanwa Bank. Along with the on campus lecture series and the annual overseas seminar, John Perry also arranged sponsorship for scholars in residence.
