The Admissions Committee is responsible for developing policy and procedures to govern admission of students to the School; for providing for, and monitoring, the selection of candidates for admission, and for overseeing and aiding in the recruitment of special groups of students. Committee members time is concentrated mainly on doing interviewing.
The Admissions Committee is divided into six sub-committees each of which is composed of four faculty members and two or more students. In the Spring of 1981, the sub-committees received batches of about 40 folders which they had approximately one week to read and rank. 10 percent of this batch of applications was chosen to be interviewed.
The admissions policies and procedures for the 1982-83 academic year proposed to increase the percentage of the class accepted early decision, initiate a policy of offering deferred acceptances, re-examine admission criteria, work to develop common admissions policies and procedures amongst the Tufts University health professional schools, centralize admissions procedures at TUSM, consider the possibility of regional interviews, and develop a mechanism of evaluating a student’s ability to afford TUSM without allowing this to unduly bias the admissions process.
